FLYING SOUTH
With the publication of the first edition of Flying South in September, 2014, Winston-Salem Writers has transitioned from its earlier Anthology Contest to a nationally recognized publication.

Submission Guidelines
Each entry must be original work and previously unpublished. Simultaneous submissions will be accepted, but authors must notify Flying South immediately and withdraw from the contest if their work is accepted elsewhere. Submissions may not be withdrawn once contest winners are announced. Prizes include publication in Flying South 2022, Best in Category, and President's Favorite. All works will be read blind. Contact information should appear ONLY in the Cover Letter section of the form. Author’s name/contact information should NOT appear anywhere on the manuscript, NOT in the “Title” field on the form, NOT in the file name. Failure to follow these instructions will result in disqualification of the work without the return of entry fees.

Submit up to 3 poems, 10 pages maximum

FICTION (including flash fiction, short story, and novel excerpt. Up to 5000 words)
Each story, including flash fiction, must be submitted separately with fee.

NON-FICTION (including memoir, essay, journal entries, and other creative non-fiction. Up to 3500 words)
Authors of Non-Fiction requiring identifiable names, should use pseudonyms during the judging process. If their work is accepted, they will have the opportunity to change those names prior to publication.
The title of the work(s) should be included in the name of the file(s) to be uploaded. For example: An_Occurrence_at_Owl_Creek_Bridge.doc . The author's name should NOT be included in the file name. Long titles may be truncated when naming the file. Poetry submissions allow up to 3 poems per entry and should be submitted in separate files for each poem.
How To Enter
Submit your entries and fees to flyingsouth.submittable.com. In the cover sheet section for each entry, include your name, address, telephone, & email address. Also indicate the category to which you’re submitting, word count and the title of the entry.
Use a standard font (Times preferred) in 12-pt. type, double-spaced, with the title/page number on each page. Poetry should be single-spaced; 3 poems counts as one entry.
Author ID must not appear on your manuscript pages, or your entry will be disqualified. Winston-Salem Writers Board Members are ineligible to enter. Submissions that are withdrawn by the author for any reason will be returned without entry fees.
Entry Fees & Payment
Entry fee is $25 ($15 for members of Winston-Salem Writers).
Multiple entries will be accepted, each accompanied by an entry fee.
Work may be withdrawn from the contest at any time prior to the announcement of the winners, but entry fees will not be refunded.
Deadline
All entries and payments must be received between March 1 and May 31, 2022. The editors reserve the right to extend the deadline if necessary.
Winners Announced
Winners will be announced on or about July 1, 2022, and will be notified by email. The list of winners will also be posted at wswriters.org/contests. Cash prizes will be paid no later than August 1, 2022.
Prizes
All entries will be considered for publication and all works accepted for publication will receive 1 copy of Flying South 2022.
The three Best in Category winners will be chosen from works accepted for publication in Flying South 2022 and will each receive $500 cash.
The President's Favorite winner will be chosen from the three Best in Category winners and will receive an additional $500 for a total of $1000.
Rights
By entering the contest, writers give Flying South permission to publish the entered work or works in Flying South 2022 and to list the author’s name in the publication, on the Winston-Salem Writers Website, and in press releases and other attendant publicity. Submissions may not be withdrawn once contest winners are announced.
Authors retain copyright to the work or works entered and published. Flying South is granted a one-time right to publish the work or works in Flying South 2022.

Judges
POETRY:
Mary Hennessy (Poetry Editor): Mary was a registered nurse most of her adult life. She returned to school late and fell in with a community of generous, word-crazed people. Her poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies. She is a Pushcart nominee. She also serves as Poetry Editor for an online site: Vietnam War Poetry. Poetry is the only thing that makes sense to her anymore.
CREATIVE NON-FICTION
Jennifer Stevenson Vincent (Creative Non-Fiction): Jennifer was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize with a speciality in Civil Rights issues. She has a distinguished career in print journalism, including senior staff writer at the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times. A founder and past President of Winston-Salem Writers, she's taught creative non-fiction at New York University, the University of South Florida and Salem College.
FICTION
Ray Morrison (Fiction Editor): Ray is an award-winning writer whose stories have appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including Ecotone, Carve, Beloit Fiction Journal, and Fiction Southeast. He is the author of the story collections, In a World of Small Truths (Press 53) and I Hear the Human Noise (Press 53). I Hear the Human Noise was awarded the 2020 IPPY Gold Medal for Southeast – Best Regional Fiction.
Bob Shar (Fiction Reader): Bob has been writing short stories for over fifty years -- reading and loving them for over sixty. His stories have appeared in The South Carolina Review, Greensboro Review, Stoneboat, 2 Bridges Review, Bartleby Snopes, Literary Orphans and elsewhere. He’s a former factory worker, journalist, little magazine mogul (founded/edited/nearly-went-broke-running The Crescent Review, 1983-87), two-time Pushcart Prize nominee, retired librarian and village idiot.
Steve Lindahl (Fiction Reader): Steve Lindahl is the author of six novels, Motherless Soul (ATTMP), White Horse Regressions (ATTMP), Hopatcong Vision Quest (Solstice), Under a Warped Cross (Solstice), Living in a Star's Light (Self Published) and Chasing Margie (Solstice). His short fiction has appeared in The Alaska Quarterly, The Wisconsin Review, Eclipse and others. He served for five years on the staff of The Crescent Review. (www.stevelindahl.com)
