CRITIQUE GROUPS | GET SERIOUS

We are open to creating new critique groups for our members when there is a need. Between the summer of 2013 and early 2014 we formed five new groups, and if needed we’ll form more in 2017. Scroll down for information on our new and existing groups.

FAQ: What are the requirements and guidelines for joining a WSW critique group?

Critique groups are an intermediate- to advanced-level writing activity for those who have been writing on their own or in classes, perfecting and editing as much as they can, and are now ready to submit their most polished work to a fresh audience. Generally, critique group members are submitting work they are developing for publication.

Critique groups are for writers who want to find out from experienced readers if what they meant to say is coming across on the page. Writers must be ready to accept the constructive responses of others to their work without becoming defensive.  (Though we do share your pain.) Questions are welcome.

As a member of the group,  a ‘critiquer’ must also be able to thoughtfully consider the other members’ writing and offer constructive, useful critique.  We ask everyone to start with something they like about each submission, and proceed using  I/me language (at least at first).

In addition to writing focus, each established group has its own unique chemistry, and different ‘critiquers’ bring different strengths to the table. While writing and critiquing are completely different skill sets, each member is expected to put their best effort into each.

  • Assignments to critique groups are temporary until all parties are comfortable working together.

  • We find that 4-6 is the ideal number for a critique group, but each group sets its own limits for size, submission length, meeting time and place, etc.

  • You must be a member to participate in a WSW critique group.

  • You must be at least 18 years old.

  • Fiction, any length, any genre.  This group exists to study plot arc, character development, dramatic pacing, narrative flow, voice, POV, and other big-picture issues.  Since we will be taking submissions of up to 20 pages, we will be unable to provide the kind of line-by-line assistance with grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, etc. that may be available in some other groups.

  • Meetings are on the second Thursday evening of every month, normally in members' homes.
