Writing

For members of Winston-Salem Writers, writing is a labor of love. That word “labor” isn’t used by accident; good writing takes some work. But when it’s complete, and we’ve given it our total concentration, we consider our efforts no less an art form than painting or musical composition. These pages provide a forum for you to read some of our recent work. Enjoy.

In the fall of 2010, as part of the Library’s On The Same Page festival, eight of our members wrote a Serial Mystery, Cheerwine Is Fine; Al Perry, our Founder and Past President, wrote the opening chapter.

Then, starting on Valentine’s Day 2011, ten members wrote a Serial Romance, Safe At Home. We were very pleased that the first chapter was written by many-times-published romance novelist and WSW member Cindy Holby.

In the summer of 2011, our thoughts naturally turned to Halloween, and Teresa Frohock, whose novel Miserere – an Autumn Tale had just been published by Night Shade Books, wrote a disturbing first chapter for our ten-chapter Horror Serial, Rady. For the first time, we upped the chapter limit to 1000 words.

Now WSW is starting a new genre serial, Autobiography, and we’re pleased to have WSW member Randell Jones write our first chapter. Randell is the author of three published histories, most recently Before They Were Heroes at King’s Mountain. Randell’s awards include the Willie Parker Peace History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians, and he is a North Carolina Humanities Council Roads Scholar.  You can read more about Randell and his thoughts on being asked to write this first chapter here.
