AKA FEST is a wonderful celebration of characters as well as a Halloween party. Like those old movies in which Mickey Rooney or Judy Garland says "Let's put on a show," writers transform themselves into performers. Nathan Ross Freeman drags his cast and torn Achilles tendon to the party, riffs a terrific poem and is a masterful Master of Ceremonies. Vijya Campagne not only thinks up and organizes the evening, she also writes and appears in a short play about The Muse and how she interacts with writers (Nathan, Susannah Cecil, John Korzen and Dan O'Sullivan). Tony Lindsay provides a drunken good-old-boy's conversation with God. Marta Felber, as Callie the Cat, crawls on stage and up into a chair to eulogize her friend Sterling. Ed Robson is a misogynistic husband who thinks his wife ought to be grateful (in blank verse, yet). Lee Swart calls for a revolution and Carol Roan plays a bag lady. Photos by Christy Dunovant.

'Taking Flight - Winston-Salem in Prose and Poetry' was launched at a party on September 16th at Barnhill's Books on Burke Street. Many of the Anthology Contest winners attended and read from their work; and we were very pleased to welcome the Mayor, Allen Joines and his wife Peggy Joines. Photos by Cindy Olivett.
